In 2008 Audi expanded the type of A3 car with a new four seat A3 Cabriolet which comes hot on the heels of its biggest rival – the BMW 1 Series Convertible. Unlike many of the new coupe cabriolets from the likes of Ford, Vauxhall and sister company Volkswagen that use a metal folding hard top, Audi like Bmw have opted for a fabric roof similar to the larger A4 Cabriolet. The benefit of the fabric roof is a considerable weight saving which improves performance and fuel economy and from a design perspective - the need of an unsightly large rear end. The roof folds completely in about 10 seconds.
Inside the cabin the use of high quality materials is evident and the instrument panel is well thought out. The engine range carries over from other Audi and Volkswagen cars with the 1.9 and 2.0 Tdi diesel engine expected to account for the majority of sales. A tiptronic or S tronic automatic gearbox is also available on select models.
Standard, Sport and S Line grades are available from launch though to date there is no statement from Audi on whether a S3 Cabriolet will be released for sale. Until then the range topping version is the 2.0 Turbo FSi Quattro S Line which offers more than enough performance for most requirements.
