Don't ya just love it?

Buying a French 'anything' was not my immediate idea of a good spend but, being disabled and using an electric wheelchair, you need something bigger than a Mini. Looking around, there is little which offers an easy-access (wide opening) front door, high seating (unable to bend my back getting in), low boot lip and bags of rear space. The Grand Picasso does all of that and, what is more, the Deluxe version has a rear end which drops even closer to the floor using a simple button. Why would you need one of those you may ask? Well, the average wheelchair can only manage a four-degree ramp so it reduces the problems of loading and unloading.
Such advantages are not just for the wheelchair user; this also of mum+baby+buggy. Once the ‘screamer’ has been strapped into their safety-seat, which is incredibly easy to fit into the Picasso, loading the old perambulator into the boot is, if I dare say it, Childs play. Getting the little horror into their seat is made even easier due to the extra height of the seats too. Oh yes, there is even an extra mirror in the front to train on the source of the constant; “Are we there yet?” noises in the back. Located just above the driver’s mirror, it is perfectly placed.
If you really want to any that Russian fella of Star Trek, Checkov I think they called him, sit him in the driver’s seat. There are more buttons, switches, lights and gadgets than there ever was on the Starship Enterprise. I have been driving mine for 2½ years and still have not got the faintest idea what they all do – but then I am not ‘turned on’ by any of them. I know how the radio works, almost, and that will do for me. There is a manual (somewhere), or so my wife keeps on telling me; but I am so much happier just not knowing. In fact, I discovered just this week that you can lock the rear doors and windows by pressing buttons on the driver’s door. I pressed one by accident, only to be told; “That’s to stop children falling out when you are driving”. I have to admit wondering why you would want to stop them falling out, but thought better of asking.
Fuel-wise, I do not seem to fill it up as over as I did the old Capri, or the Mini Clubman for that matter. Mine is a diesel automatic with a manual override and ‘flippers’ on the steering wheel. They always leave me thinking about my miss-spent youth, pinball machines and leather jackets for some unknown reason. The most economical thing is to leave it in automatic, turn on the cruise control and brew a cuppa while the electronics take over. Should you need it, the kick-down acceleration will get you out of whatever trouble you have got yourself in. Failing that, there seem to be enough airbags to let the thing float in most of the UK’s rivers. The breaks work well too! (Got the t-shirt.)
For the sporty types, it will out-accelerate most boy racers from the traffic lights; but they’ll have you on the corners. The turning circle is excellent, but you do not want to be going too fast around the tighter corners or you may find yourself wondering if …
I love this motor but wish they had put as much thought into the number of storage spaces that Renault di with the early Scenic. I used to be able to hide allsorts in the Scenic, but ‘she’ finds everything in this one. I also wish that that had an override for the electronic handbrake. I got stuck in the wilds of Staffordshire on the night of the 2010 big freeze and could not get recovered as the electronics had all frozen up. Ouch.
Buy another? You bet.

Favourite Features

The dipping rear end is an absolute treat; not only for wheelchair users, but for anyone with heavy items to load.
The reversing sensors are also extremely useful as anyone who has driven a modern vehicle knows, it is usually impossible to see the rear end when reversing. The optional front-end sensors are also useful for getting into those very tight parking spaces.
One of the many ‘buttons’ I regularly make use of is the dashboard colour changer and dimmer. Many modern vehicles have over-illuminated dashboards with hidden dimmer switches but Citroen have taken care of this by fitting a very easily accessed steering wheel control. The electronic anti-dazzle rear view mirror, which I anticipated to be another useless gimmick, is excellent in use. It is really nice not having to reach up and flick the mirror when dazzled by the lights of a following car.
The ease with which it is possible to switch from five to seven to two seats, and various combinations thereof, is the best configuration I have used. There is no reason to ever remove any seats as they all simply fold up out of the way with the middle row of five offering the ability to fold the whole seat down flat or just to fold the ‘sit on me’ bit upright. Once upright, it can be slid forward and backward to any position you might wish. All seats are also independently adjustable for passenger comfort.

Suggested Improvements

I would like to see this type of vehicle fitted with a built-in loading ramp. The first manufacturer to off one of these will conquer the disability market. Increasing the travel of the dipping rear end would also be an advantage.
As I like to travel around in an ice box and my wife prefers a sauna, the independently controlled air conditioning zones should have provided an answer; but it falls a long way short. I like the cold air hitting me in the face - is this from my days as a biker, I wonder? My wife, in the passenger seat, likes a draft free-environment. Unfortunately, while the passenger has the facility to control their own temperature zone, they have no control over the fan speed or the where the heat is targeted, and her feet are ALWAYS cold. Daughter, meanwhile, can control the speed of the fan in the back but cannot control the temperature. Strange…
opening any ONE window tends to be impossible due to the ‘drumming’ noise at speeds over 50 or so. This is so unbearable that the windows either remain closed or two need to be opened together. It only takes a small gap on the second window, but it is annoying all the same.
The dimming mirror is fantastic, but it would be wonderful if they could do something for the wing mirrors too. Why can these not benefit from electronic dipping and, for that matter, why are they not heated like they are on the Touran, the Picasso, Galaxy and just about every other modern vehicle on the road.

Grand C4 Picasso

Review by Glenn William Allen on 21/6/2010

Vehicle

1.6 Hdi 16V 110hp EGS VTR+

Review

A fabulous car with unheard of economy for a seven seater. Roomy and light with loads of great equipment, some of which is unexpected and shows a real eye for detail. The only weakness lies in the automatic gearbox which can be a bit skittish and lumpy in slow stop-go driving. Good value.

Favourite Features

The economy. On a run the claimed 61mpg is easily exceeded! The seats are very comfortable and the high level windscreen gives a fantastic feeling of space.

Suggested Improvements

A smoother gearbox or better still a cvt box. Measures to reduce the thump on power take up would make it much more comfortable in traffic.

A Grande Day Out

Review by Iain McDermid on 28/4/2010

Vehicle

2.0 Hdi 138hp EGS Exclusive

Review

The feeling of space as soon as that door opens puts a smile on your face. No more apologising, mind your head or push it harder and it will fit, everyone can comfortly fit inside with ease. The ride and handling is smooth and being a Citroen Hdi engine you couldn't wish for a more refined piece of pulling power.

Favourite Features

Very comfortable seats which on a long touring holiday are essential along with plenty of leg room. The large wind sceen also helps give a scene of space. All the drink and cubby holes to put your belongings in.

Suggested Improvements

Darkening the windows at the touch of a button would be very cool not only for style but security (If you can see out and they can't see in, it would have to be a very stupid theif to try his luck). Car mats that don't move around - maybe a push on stud type. Upholstery that is stain resistant to anything. Maybe a small lockable box to put any small valuables in that can't be removed by the theif.

Citroen C4 Grand Picasso 2.0HDi Automatic

Review by Jill Macleod on 28/4/2010

Vehicle

2.0 Hdi 16V 138hp EGS VTR+

Review

Brilliant performance, used regularly for motorway travel, cruise control is responsive and economical. Majority of controls are on steering wheel and easily used. Comfortable ride, dual heating controls for passenger/driver use. Versatile seating arrangement, 7 seats maximum, although this takes up boot space - all back seats can be laid flat for easy loading - low boot sill a bonus. Do not like the automatic gearbox - very jumpy in first and reverse - other reviews say same so it's not just me! Had reversing sensors fitted - with the length of car I think this should be standard. Fuel consumption average for a two-litre petrol engine, good on long journeys. Overall very pleased with car - excellent - apart from the auto EGS gearbox.

Favourite Features

Versatility of seating/loading arrangement. Comfortable for driver and passengers - aircraft-like tables in back of front seats, DVD straps too. Easy to drive, glides along easily and effortlessly. Controls on steering column - easy to use. Cruise control excellent.

Suggested Improvements

Needs improvement to EGS gearbox - uncontrollably judders in first gear when in traffic, have to leave large gap in front and then get revs up to avoid this - same in reverse but difficulty parking due to juddering. Suggest reversing sensors as standard on this length of car.

My bus

Review by Stephen M Fallon on 28/4/2010

Vehicle

1.6 Hdi 16V 110HP VTR+

Review

This is a big car. The windscreen seems to go on for miles. When you pull back the sun visor there's about another foot of glass which disappears over ones head. I love this car it has to be the best one I have ever had. My kids call it the bus it does have seven seats so it's nearly a bus. It's long and wide and handles like a dream. As for driving the steering is excellent and brakes slow you down nicely. Overall it has, for me anyway, most of the things one would expect from Citroen. An excellent sound system loads of storage lockers comfy seats blinds for second row passengers. I could wax lyrical all day given the chance, but the only way to understand what I'm talking about is getting in one and having a drive.

Favourite Features

The controls for an excellent trip computer and radio are on the steering wheel and the end of indicator and wiper controls. When the wheel is moved, the centre of the wheel stays still. Unlike my previous car which again had them on the wheel but moved when it was turned. The electric handbrake system is marvellous. Come up to lights stop handbrake on first gear engaged then just pull off piece of cake. No more rolling back or riding the clutch it so simple. The huge front lockers in front of the driver and passenger are wonderful and keep things tidy. The one thing I find amazing is the fuel consumption, I reckon if I drive normally, I can get about 49 to the gallon. Driving really sensibly, which perhaps one should anyway, I can get over 56 a gallon. I love this car.

Suggested Improvements

The handbrake could be sited a bit nearer to the driver. The fresh air blower will only work when the engine is on. I normally stay in the car when others go shopping and in summer, it will be a bit of a nuisance ,as I enjoy reading and will now have to find shaded places to park.

Great Family Car

Review by Duncan Baxter on 27/4/2010

Vehicle

1.6i THP 150hp EGS Exclusive

Review

I have the new Citroen C4 Picasso, it's so roomy great all round visabilty, interior mirror to watch the children & with the seats that all fold down so quickly it makes it easier to buy big items as well as taking extra children. Fuel comsuption is great with a 40 ltr tank I have done many a journey in this car & was surprised that the fuel gauge had hardly moved. Fantastic family car, I have recommended this to all my friends & family already

Favourite Features

- Driver & passenger Lumbar support seats & arm rests
- Interior mirror to watch the little ones
- Blinds in back windows
- 3 rows of seats
- column gears
- great alround visabilty

Suggested Improvements

Well done Citroen this car is perfect, they have done everything you can think off to make this car a legue of it's own, I'd be really interested how they can improve on this model as it's perfect the way it is.

My C4 Grand Picasso

Review by Paul Davies on 23/2/2010

Vehicle

1.6 Hdi 110hp EGS Exclusive

Review

I have had this car for around 2 yrs now and its been a really great vehicle for me. When I first got it I was concerned about the mpg of the car fearing that it would be an awful 30 something but I have been amazed at the 55ish mpg and the considering the performance that is amazing. I have a bit of a lead foot and a taste for speed and I was amazed to find it went well over 110mph without a problem and still plenty of revs to spare (just awesome). Great space and reliability.

Favourite Features

I love the performance of this car its fast reliable and above all frugal with the diesel. The all round visibilty is very good and the large windscreen lets in lots more light than an ordinary car.

Suggested Improvements

Fuel filler is a pain and its really hard to get a full tank of diesel without it spewing out all over your feet and trousers. Electronic park brake disengaged 4 times whilst on a hill waiting at a junction so it would be nice to have a mechanical park brake!

Great Car!

Review by Habib Gahbiche on 14/2/2010

Vehicle

1.6 Hdi 16V 110HP VTR+

Review

This car is very practical for family use; it is very easy to put in and remove seats. (Unlike the 307sw and 807 Peugeot, you have to manually remove seats OUT from the car). Concerning driving, the parking sensors make it very easy to park the car, as it is quite difficult to drive a huge family car. Sometimes, I feel I am driving a tank but I enjoy the powerful engine and the comfortable seats.

Favourite Features

- Easy to set the back seats up.
- Beautiful interior design.
- Multimedia (MP3 support, Big screen...)
- Spacious and very comfortable !
- Air conditioning (for the back seats)

Suggested Improvements

The exterior feels cheap: A better design is suggested. TV screens (As it is a family car and it is very important to have fun sitting in the back)

A big car

Review by Stuart G Cooper on 10/2/2010

Vehicle

1.6i THP 150hp EGS VTR+

Review

The looks of the C4 Grand Picasso are at a glance quite stunning, for a big car (MPV mum chariot). It still keeps to women wanting the boot space for, shopping and shopping and even more shopping -the Grand easily manages the biggest of weekly shops. For the man, the seven seats allow for the group of friends to be off to the away match, and even have clever little space saving gismos to keep all beverages safe from toppling (saving the hours of earache form the angry better half) plus allowing the driver his soft drink the benefit of the little cooler. This of course can be a godsend for the male if his better half is driving, a chilled beer while enjoying the top sound system, BLISS.

There are a number of different models available, the two litre vtr is one of the better choices but if you're thinking of putting your foot down and away you go, forget it. You have to accept it is 'A BIG CAR' and so unless you have an unladen top end model, leaving the boy racer in the evo next to you is a non starter but once on the motorway, cruise control on it is a nice drive.

So, would I recommend the C4 Grand Picasso?? Yes on the whole I would, a good family car (get a diesel) which is a godsend on the wet, winter mornings when you can enjoy the seven seats, until that is the full time whistle goes!!!!!

Favourite Features

Obviously the seven seats and the big boot when down to a five seater. The little cooler and beverage holders (yes sad I know but will be worth it's weight in gold, rather than the five or six spilt drinks).

Suggested Improvements

Improvements?? There is a definite blind spot on double roundabouts where driving sight is hampered for a nano second, this could be solved by either shortening or the opposite of the quarter lights.

Love it

Review by LIZI SAMSON on 8/12/2009

Vehicle

1.6i VTi 120HP VTR+

Review

I am writing a review on the Citroen C4 Picasso 7 seater. I changed to this car in november 2009 as my old car was too small for my wheelchair which brings me first, to the boot of the car - it is so spacious you would not beleive how much you can fit into it. The extra seats are placed here but fold down so easy even my 9 yr old does it. The light is in fact also a torch.

There is plenty of room in the middle row. Each seat is independent so people can make themselves confortable. The front of the car is very very spacious the driver and passenger do not feel cramped. The car is amazingly economical the money I have saved since switching over is unbeleivable. It is a dream to drive and were it is higher than most cars you have fantastic all round view which makes a safer drive.

I would recommend this car to any family. It has all round air bags and you can switch off the air bag on passenger side so that you can have a rear facing car seat in the front.

The C4 is a very smooth drive, is extremely quiet for a diesel, it holds the road brillantly both in the wet and the dry. The layout of the instruments is very good and the centre of the dashboard is a light up panel which is your instruments ie speed petrol etc. It has cruise control and a limiter on it.

Favourite Features

I love features on the C4. I love the built in air freshener it is a small thing but a hit. I love the cruise control and speed limiter, also the instrument panel which you can change the colour contrast and brightness to suit. I love the torch in the boot which is also the boot light.
All the seat movements in the car and done with the 2 finger rule which means anyone can do it.
You can move the visors in the front of the car backwords so that the windscreen is alot bigger which I love.

My biggest and most favourite feature of this car is the the fridge on the automatics under the stereo you have a cupboard and if you put cold drinks in there the cooler will keep them cold which I think is awsome. Also the passenger can control the air on there side so if the driver is hot and passenger is cold the passenger can have hot air on them whilst the driver keep the cool air.

Suggested Improvements

The main thing I do not like about this car on the automatic version is as the car changes gear it tends to lurch which dealer said was just something the car does and to avoid it use the manual controls. Well I am sorry if I wanted to drive manual I would of brought manual. I think if they were to sort that out then the car would be even more perfect than I find it now.
