What a Smart Car

Review by Adam Summerskill on 28/4/2010

Review

I purchased a Smartie for two reasons economy and quirkiness, if there is such a word! We live in an area where two cars are essential, the second being for short trips, school run and shopping.

Nuts and bolts, the Smartie is certainly idiosyncratic, a 6 speed semi auto box, aircon and Tardis like interior. I am 6' 1" with long legs.... plenty of room. She does a genuine 55 odd miles to the gallon and so long as you don't want to fly has very adequate perfomance for short trips. Tax is £35 per year and insurance is about as cheap as it gets. The ride is a little firm but do remember it comes from a German stable, Mercedes, and so that is predictable.

The boot is amazingly large for such a small motor and if required can be parked 'nose in' this has been very useful on a number of occasions. Would I buy another? Emphatically YES!

Favourite Features

Copious amount of legroom, choice of fully automatic or clutchless manual, large bootspace. I love the fact that it doesn't feel like a small car when driving and you also get waves and flashes from other Smartiepants. Fixed full length sunshine roof.

Suggested Improvements

I would suggest they improve the ride quality and provide luggage area cover for no extra cost. Apart from that for a cheap second car it is perfect!

Cute but far from perfect

Review by Mr Edwards on 26/4/2010

Review

Smarts certainly have the cute/novelty factor and many probably buy them for that reason. Their dinky size is certainly a big positive, but they're far from perfect. Every tiny pothole or small speedbump throws you around terribly, the power to pull away quickly at roundabouts is dreadful and the MPG is far from what Smart would have you believe. I bought it for the supposedly excellent fuel efficiency, but am averaging little more than 40MPG.

Favourite Features

- Cuteness/novelty factor.
- Ease of manœuvring/parking: the turning circle is so small I barely ever need to do traditional 3 point turns anymore.
- Height: like the Mercedes A Class, you have a higher driving position which compensates a little for the car being so dinky.

Suggested Improvements

The suspension is terrible. The current Smart fortwo model's suspension is supposedly better than the former model, so I'd hate to feel what that one's like! You really do feel every tiny bump (which makes for a far from comfortable ride with the state of our roads!). MPG is very average.

Fortwo Cabrio

Review by John Chung on 3/12/2009

Review

It saves money from refilling fuel, and it's environmentally friendly. Very useful. Some neck pain and space enclosure. Would improve if there is more space, and parking spots for smart cars. The model is very stylish and many of my friends constantly comment about it. It's very interesting how easy to park with smart car's size, but it's very cramped in there. It would be better if there were more spots in the car.

Favourite Features

I love its fuel saving ability and use of electricity. The speakers work very well and very clear too. The model and outlook is very stylish, causing everyone asking me about the car.

Suggested Improvements

It would improve more if the space is not that squished, and the meters are not placed on the top of the window. Usually the space below the window, I put many things there, but not for smart car. It takes up the room.

Some neck pains too.

Car Leasing vs Buying

Car Leasing Video DemoThere are many practical reasons to leasing a car rather than buying one. Car leasing offers lower monthly payments, lower initial deposit, road tax and breakdown recovery. You also have the opportunity to drive a new car every two or three years and all vehicles include the standard manufacturer’s warranty.
