Smart Fortwo Passion

Review

When looking around at new cars my options were limited by my budget and I didnt think I would be able to afford much for my money. A friend of mine told me about the offers that Mercedes were doing on smart cars so I went to Mercedes Benz of Hertford to take a look. I went with the preconception that Smart cars were small, ugly and unrefined but was really shocked that this couldnt be further from the truth! The Smart range is really highly spec'd, economical and above all pretty. I ended up buying a high spec Passion for just over £100 per month and have loved every minute of it.

Favourite Features

The high points are: £15 road tax for a year; what a bargain! Very economical on Fuel. The standard versions come with a lot of kit like Sat Nav, ABS, bluetooth etc. An extra £30 per month will get you: heated leather seats, metallic paint, alloy wheels which is more than enough for most people.

Suggested Improvements

The gearbox can be a bit jerky between gears however once you get used to it you can compensate by your driving style. The Phone Prep could be better as when you are talking to people the Microphone appears to be in the stereo so if you dont lean into the stereo when speaking it doesnt sound very good at the other end. The doorlocks initially were a bit sticky but have now loostened up.

Smart ForTwo Vehicle

Review

I think that this car is great for city dwellers and for people that need a low cost small car to nip around in. Its handy for nipping into town, doing a spot of shopping and is so fuel efficient. The road tax is so cheap £35 for the year and the boot has more than enough room for the usual bits. Its lightweight but still has safety in mind and is really easy to drive. Perfect little car for all people of all ages.

Favourite Features

Small size, easy to read dashboard, fuel efficient and cheap to tax, fits into small spaces. I love the fact that I can rely on this little car to perform as a normal sized car does. It has everything one would need to get out and about and live life rather than worry about if you can afford the petrol to fill up your over sized car that you cant afford to run. With this car you can afford to run it and get out there.

Suggested Improvements

Wider wheels so you dont feel every bump in the road. Sometimes when you are driving and you hit a small bump in the road you feel as though the side panels are going to fall off... More impact / shock absorbers maybe.

Smart Car review

Review by Razina on 28/4/2010

Vehicle

2DR COUPE 1.0 84bhp PASSION LUXURY

Review

Initially, I wasn't convinced by the SMART car. My boyfriend had purchased it through the hire purchase scheme and the first thing that went through my mind was space! It didn't seem ideal at all, and I've always thought of SMART cars as being tiny little machines that manage to squeeze into the tinest of car spaces, where no other car can even dream of parking. However, I was stunned when I sat down in this wonderful model. It was so spacious that I almost forgot that we were sitting in a SMART car! Deceiving on the outside, yes, but don't take the exterior of the car for what it is inside. Modern, clean and spacious. I love it!

Favourite Features

Spacious, small size for street parking, grocery carrying ability, style, quietness, heated seats, good air conditioning, clear roof, and fun, fun, fun.

Suggested Improvements

Only two things I would change. The seat adjuster absolutely needs to be put on the side of the seat by the door and the screw latch on the engine compartment is mickey mouse!!

Not as Smart anymore

Review by Zoe on 7/12/2009

Vehicle

2DR COUPE 1.0 84bhp PASSION

Review

This is my third Smart and probably my least favourite of the three. All three have been Passions, so I can make a direction comparison. Yes, the 1 litre engine is larger, but it doesn't feel like much more oomph than my 0.6 litre one had 10 years ago. The delay in acceleration has finally been resolved. The trim quality seems to have dropped though, and small bits of coloured plastic always seem to be flicking off at inoportune moments (like when indicating).

Favourite Features

The heated seat come in the fabric option now, rather than just the leather. The lockable glove compartment is a worthwhile optional extra. The heated wing mirrors make cold mornings clearer.

Suggested Improvements

Bring back the internal boot release button; make the interior light stay on longer; put a hinge on the engine compartment cover, and an easier to use latch to secure it.

Smart For Two

Review

It is a great idea in a millenium they have come up with this little gem of a car. It runs smoothly and has no negatives about it. I just enjoy cruising in my little car as i can manoveur it like a Bike. It is easy to parK and what more would you want?

Favourite Features

Best feature has to be the two seater as you do not have to give lifts to your mates every now and then. In my opinion it saves fuel and therefore good for the environment.

Suggested Improvements

They should try and fit a third seat on the back, it is just an idea but can prove to be a hit with smart lovers like myself.

Brilliant little car

Review by Janet Goodlad on 6/12/2009

2DR COUPE 1.0 mhd 71bhp PASSION

Review

Lovely little car. Can't believe how big it is inside as it will accommodate someone who is 6' 4''. Not cheap to buy but it's well made and my car feels quite luxurious. You can by lots of extras for the car and can alter the look completely by changing the outer panels. The car can be driven in automatic or tiptronic. Automatic was really easy to get used to and switching between the two is a doddle. I'm not sure it's as economical on petrol as some might think but road tax is cheap at £35 per year.

Favourite Features

I love the leather seats which are heated and are great on cold winter mornings. Parking is so easy to do in this car as it only takes up 2/3rd's of a normal parking space and reversing is a breeze. I also love the panoramic roof which makes the car feel even more roomy and airy. It stands out in the crowd as something very different and people look as I go by.

Suggested Improvements

The car isn't very good at getting in to fifth gear when it's in automatic and going up a ramp to a multi storey car park is hopeless. That's when I change over to the tiptronic function. I'd like to see the CD/coin holder as standard instead of paying extra for it.

My Smart and Me

Review by Milo Larkin on 4/12/2009

Vehicle

2DR COUPE 1.0 84bhp PASSION

Review

Now, I know the Smart isn't everyone's favourite car, hell it's not even mine. But despite that, it is a good car. The handling is off, the engine sounds like it's going to die, and the interior is plasticy. But for some reason I still like it. Worth the money, in my honest opinion, and as a tight buyer, I can honestly say I don't usually say that.

The things I do like however, are plentiful. They don't depreciate quickly (if at all), and the running costs are ridiculously low. Despite the dodgy interior, it's comfortable, and in the front seats there is a reasonable amount of leg room (reasonable as in more than a telephone box).
And let's face it, it's bloody cool. When you drive along a 98 Escort, or even overtake it, you can't help but look out the window and grin at the sucker in the other lane.

Favourite Features

The engine is slightly offputting at first, but when you get used to it, it's like a nice hum. It's like a bungee jumping rope. You think it's going to break, and the more you watch the more paranoid you are it will, but it doesn't. And that is a miracle!

I also love the nifty gadgets you get on the inside. Expensive extras, but they help to make your mini motor all the more sexy.

Suggested Improvements

The only real improvement I can suggest is that they either improve the interior, as it's like sitting in a massive plasticy suit, or reduce the price! It's offputting at first, and although you will make your money back on the running costs, it's the big figures you see when you're buying a car, not the niggly little extras you gradually get back.
