Jaguar was founded as the Swallow Sidecar Company in Blackpool in 1922, and became Jaguar Cars Ltd in 1945. The first vehicle to carry the Jaguar name was the SS Jaguar 100, released in 1935. A number of merges and new owners have occurred over the years, most recently being bought by Tata Motors of India in 2008 and operated as part of Jaguar Land Rover.
Jaguar made its name in the 1950s with a series of elegantly-styled sports cars and luxury saloons; quintessential British upper class vehicles. Since then, a string of award-winning cars, engineering breakthroughs, and innovative technologies have brought Jaguar into the 21st Century. The 1948 XK120 was the fastest production automobile of its day. Jaguar’s most significant saloon, the XJ, has been in production for 40 years, and although significant changes have been made the exterior styling still hints at the classic design.

1997 saw the launch of the XK8 and supercharged XKR sports cars with Jaguar’s new AJ-V8 engine. The XK features a light but rigid aluminium bodyshell and is available in Coupe or Convertible. It won the respected Top Gear magazine "GT of the Year" and "Car of the Year" awards in 2006. The unique high-performance Jaguar XKR-S Coupe, launched in 2008, is available exclusively in Europe with only 200 models being built.
In 2001, Jaguar introduced a lower-priced, luxury vehicle, the X-Type, available in saloon or estate versions, which soon became popular, especially with the introduction of Jaguar’s first diesel engine.
The latest addition is the aerodynamic and beautiful Jaguar XF, representing a shift from classic styling to a more contemporary and sleek design. It was awarded the prestigious What Car? of the Year award 2008 and What Diesel? Magazine’s Car of the Year for its Euro IV compliant diesel model.
