Introduced in 2007, the Patriot is based on the DaimlerChrysler GS platform like the Jeep Compass. It is a compact SUV, good value for money and economic on fuel (the diesel returns an average of 42.2mpg). The exterior combines Jeep’s signature seven-slot grille with rugged yet modern styling and 17” cast-aluminium wheels. The rear seats have a 60/40 split seatback with a reclining feature. Folding down the front passenger seat extends load capacity to a massive 1,775 litres.
Engine options are the 2.4-litre 5-speed petrol engine or 2.0-litre 6-speed CRD engine. Two trims are offered, Sport and Limited. Continuously Variable Automatic Transaxle (CVT2) with autostick transmission is available on the 2.4-litre Limited model.
The 4WD system, Freedom-Drive I, drives the front wheels during normal use and operates automatically in 4WD when necessary. LOCK mode gives full-time 4WD for handling low-traction surfaces such as sand or snow. Independent rear suspension improves handling and ESP and ERM adds stability and safety. ABS and Brake Assist are standard and the traction-control can be turned off depending on the terrain.
Rivals include the Hyundai Tuscon, Kia Sportage and Suzuki Grand Vitara.
