This new generation Freelander is a vast improvement over its predecessor, but it still clearly belongs to the Landrover family with its rugged purposeful appearance combined with a fresh modern twist. As one would expect with any Landrover, it offers brilliant off road capability but the Freelander 2 is just as happy on the tarmac offering a very refined ride. With long travel independent suspension and rigid body construction it can offer taut handling and a quality ride comfort. Safety wise, the Freelander 2 has been awarded the top 5-star Euro NCAP rating for adult occupant protection and 4-stars in the child protection category. Overall, this Euro NCAP score has shown that this Freelander 2 is the best in class for occupant safety.
For serious off roading, the Freelander 2 has a minimum of 210mm ground clearance and can wade to a depth of up to 500mm. Terrain Responsive® (option on entry level model), Intelligent 4WD with electronic centre coupling and Hill Descent Control are all Landrover technologies to assist the driver when the going gets tough.
Freelander 2 models are available with a choice of 2 engines – the 2.2litre TD4 common rail turbo diesel which is fitted with a variable nozzle turbocharger for fast response and bags of mid range torque. This engine option comes with a 6 speed manual transmission as standard, but a 6 speed auto with CommandShift ™ is an option. The other engine choice is the 3.2 litre i6 petrol with 233BHP. This option provides a 0-60 time of 8.4secs with loads of torque available. Six speed auto transmissions with CommandShift ™ is standard fit, but a manual gearbox is available as an option.
