The IS model is an entry level luxury model; the first generation model was launched in 1997. The new model was launched in 2005, it features a sporty and sleek coupe-like design, and it is aimed at rivals like the Audi A4, BMW 3-Series and Mercedes C-Class. Like its European counterparts, the IS series uses rear wheel drive for a more dynamic driving experience. The Lexus IS is packed with options and high tech features, it can be fitted with a Pre-Crash Safety system which involves a front mounted radar that scans the road and applies the brake if there is unavoidable obstacle which can significantly reduce the risk of injuries in a crash. There is also an advanced satellite navigation option available which uses dynamic route guidance to help to avoid traffic congestion and delays by suggesting alternative routes. The 7 inch screen can also be used with the Intelligent Parking Assist feature which can help you to park in tight spaces with a rear mounted camera and distance sensor.
Engine options available include the petrol 2.5 litre V6 engine with VVT-i. There is also a new diesel engine, the first for Lexus; it is a 2.2 litre direct injection turbocharged engine, with around 177 BHP and it is capable of an impressive 46 MPG. Transmissions options available are the six-speed manual or the six-speed semi automatic.
Lexus added the IS F to their range in 2008 which was designed to take on the likes of the BMW M3 and Mercedes C63 AMG. It features a hugely powerful 5.0 litre V8 engine as well as an aggressive, sporty body, sports interior, Brembo brakes and Integrated Vehicle Dynamics Management (VDIM). It features an eight-speed semi-automatic direct shift gear box capable of upshifts in 0.1 seconds; it also has a full manual mode.
Trim levels include the SR with sport bodywork, the SE, SE-I and luxurious SE-L model with leather upholstery, memory for seats, steering wheel position and door mirrors and climate control with clean air filter.
