The 2 is Mazda's smallest car and was first launched in 2002 to replace the 121. It is based on the same platform as the Ford Fiesta. The latest version was released in 2007 and is now available as either a three or five-door hatchback. The Mazda 2 has been highly acclaimed and has won the World Car of the Year award for 2008. The 2 uses Mazda's lightweight design techniques which enables it to have sharp handling and nippy acceleration whilst also being able to achieve impressive MPG and low emission figures – the 1.4 diesel version achieves just under 70 MPG. Its reasonable price and good selection of equipment make it tough competition for main rivals the Peugeot 207, Seat Ibiza and Vauxhall Corsa.
The 2 is one of the safest Supermini's around. It scored a five-star EuroNCAP crash test rating and includes safety features such as Anti-Lock brakes with electronic brake force distribution, IsoFix child seat fittings and up to six airbags depending on model. The 2 features class leading headroom and practical features such as large door pockets and versatile 60/40 split rear seats on select models.
Mazda offer three petrol engine options, starting with the 1.3 MZR with either 75 or 86 PS and the sporty 1.5 litre MZR with 103 PS. The efficient diesel 1.4 MZ-CD is capable of 68.9 MPG and with emissions of just 107 g/km CO2 is also cheap to tax. The Mazda 2 is fitted with a five-speed manual transmission.
Trim levels start with the TS which includes air conditioning, remote central locking and CD player with MP3 Aux Input on its feature list. The next model is the TS2 with even more features including electric door mirrors and 15 inch alloy wheels. The top of the range is the Sport model which includes extra features such as projector headlights, 16 inch alloy wheels, Dynamic Stability control, fog lights, sports interior, rain sensing wipers and a Sports exterior styling kit with bumpers, skirts and rear spoiler.
