The 3 model range was launched in 2003, replacing the 323. It is based on the award winning Ford Focus platform and received a refresh in 2006 and 2008 to sharpen up the sleek design. Compared with rivals such as the Vauxhall Astra, Fiat Bravo and Kia Ceed, the Mazda comes across as being great value for money with a large range of standard features, as well as offering a great driving experience and exceptional reliability. The versatile 3 offers a spacious interior with class leading shoulder room, adjustable steering wheel and 60/40 split rear seats for larger loads.
Engine options start with the 1.4 litre MZR petrol, then there is the 1.6 litre MZR, 2.0 MZR and sporty 2.3 litre turbocharged with 260 PS as found in the MPS model. Diesel engine options include the 1.6 MZR-CD with 90 or 109 PS and the 2.0 MZR-CD with 143 PS. Transmission options available are the five or six-speed manual, or the four-speed Activematic automatic.
All Mazda 3 models are fitted with a high level of standard equipment, the base level 'S' model includes electric front windows, electric, heated mirrors, MP3 compatibility and a range of high-level safety features. The Takara model adds several notable features including climate control air-conditioning, 16 inch alloy wheels and six-CD audio system. Next up is the Sport model with 17 inch alloy wheels, traction control and LED rear lights. The MPS range is the 3's feature packed performance sports model with 260 PS, limited slip differential, 18 inch alloy wheels, MPS sports exterior and sports bucket seats to name a few of its features. There is also the top of the range MPS Aero model which adds aerodynamic two-pronged sports mirrors, larger rear sports spoiler and Eibach lowered suspension.
