Mazda MX-5

The MX-5 has become something of a modern classic since the original was launched in 1989. It is Mazda's take on the classic British roadster and the focus of the MX-5 has always been to provide a lightweight car with an enjoyable, involved driving experience. The latest third-generation model was launched in 2005, it follows Mazda's 'gram strategy' which has meant that any excess weight has been reduced resulting in one of the most agile and sporty cars around.

The third-generation of the MX-5 is the most sophisticated yet. The classic charm of the original has been bought up to date and it's now a much easier convertible to live with everyday thanks to a comfortable ride, modern and functional interior and less wind noise in the cabin. The availability of a folding hardtop model - badged RC, makes it an even more sensible buy and the metal roof retracts in just 12 seconds, plus it comes with the otherwise optional air conditioning. It's lost none of the fun factor either and is still hugely enjoyable on open roads. It is sportier and more focussed than other convertibles in the market like the Mini Convertible and Peugeot 207CC.

A notable new feature on the latest model is the addition of a folding hardtop on the Roadster Coupe version. The new hardtop has been designed to be as light and strong as possible to maintain the MX-5's sportiness, it is electrically powered and can be lowered in just 12 seconds – the fastest of any folding roof. Its unique storage location, etween the boot and cabin also mean that the luggage space is unaffected by the roofs' location.

The MX-5 is available with two petrol engine options; the 1.8i with 126 PS and the 2.0i with 160 PS. Both come with standard five-speed manual transmission, there is also a 2.0i Sport model available, which is fitted with a six-speed manual transmission.

The standard model starts at around £15000 and  includes 16 inch alloy wheels and air conditioning,   Next is the Sport, Niseko and Zsport which includes leather seat trim, heated seats and front fog lights.
