Mazda were founded in 1920 and made their first motor vehicle in the 1930's starting large scale production on passenger vehicles in the 1960's. Their reputation quickly grew with their rotary engined cars which offered good power with light weight. They became the first and only Japanese car manufacturer to win the Le Mans 24hr endurance race with their rotary powered 787B GT car. Their use of rotary engined cars continues to this day with the lightweight, sport RX-8 model which delivers 230 hp from its 1.3 litre engine. Ford and Mazda started a partnership in 1979 which has proved extremely fruitful for both companies, with them sharing engine designs and making shared car platforms.
