After a legal battle the FIA International Court of Appeal has found the Brawn GP cars legal.
Before the lights even went out for the first race in Australia a few weeks ago there was serious controversy. Button and his team mate Barrichelo stormed qualifying with some serious pace and other teams weren’t happy.
Some analysis showed that they had a slightly different aerodynamics set up than everyone else on the grid which gave them what appeared a significant advantage.
The element involved was the diffusers, a small piece of aerodynamic equipment at the rear of the car, which affect the way air flows off the back. Situated between the floor and the tail the Brawn GP diffusers are a different shape and were questioned by other teams.
BMW Sauber, Ferrari, Red Bull Racing and Renault all raised the issue which was discussed in the court in Paris on Tuesday. The court heard that the race stewards who allowed the team to race in Australia and Malaysia had been correct and they were acceptable.
The official statement from the FIA reads:
'The FIA International Court of Appeal has decided to deny the appeals submitted against decisions numbered 16 to 24 taken by the Panel of the Stewards on 26 March at the 2009 Grand Prix of Australia and counting towards the 2009 FIA Formula One World Championship.
Based on the arguments heard and evidence before it, the Court has concluded that the Stewards were correct to find that the cars in question comply with the applicable regulations.'
With Button leading the way in this years drivers championship and Brawn well ahead of the two big teams of McLaren and Ferrari there will be some changes to the rest of the pack. Ferrari have already stated that they will have to make some fundamental changes to their car in light of this diffuser set up being declared legal.
