A new scheme to promote British built automobiles is dishing out the MBE award to Britain’s vehicles.
Alistair Darling is finally pulling his finger out to promote the failing automotive economy but the fact still remains that production is falling. Since 1968, production has never been falling as fast so others are stepping in where the government isn’t.
Motoring websites have created the ‘Motoring Honours list’ of MBE’s (Made Better in England) to highlight the vehicles that are manufactured on home soil. The government’s new scrappage scheme is set to kick in next month and with today being St Georges Day what better time than to launch this initiative.
The scheme is not just promoting the obvious choices like Vauxhall or Jaguar Land Rover, but wan people to know that there are other cars built int the UK for foreign companies. Workers in the Sunderland plant that churn out thousands of Nissan Micra’s and those in Swindon, making the Honda Civic, would be grateful for more orders. The idea behind the campaign is to raise awareness of how people loking to buy or lease a new car could also help stimulate our national economy.
Katie Armitage, Marketing Manager for motors.co.uk said:
“There’s no denying the UK motor industry has hit hard times with news of doom and gloom hitting the headlines. What is inspiring from our research however is not only the number of buyers who actively want to support the country’s industry by choosing to buy cars made on home soil but also the number who would be kick-started to do this by the Government’s proposed scrappage scheme.
“There are still more cars and vans manufactured in England than any other european country and buyers want this to continue.” Duncan Colman, Product Manager for commercial van vansunited.co.uk said:
“In the face of economic uncertainty now is the time to celebrate the vans made in England such as the iconic Ford Transit which was designed in Essex and is assembled in Southampton with transmissions from Merseyside. The poll shows that van and car buyers would prefer to buy English but awareness of which cars are made in England is still low.
“As part of the campaign, all the vans and cars that are made in England on the vansunited.co.uk and motors.co.uk websites will be awarded an MBE to help buyers choose an English motor.”

There are many practical reasons to leasing a car rather than buying one. Car leasing offers lower monthly payments, lower initial deposit, road tax and breakdown recovery. You also have the opportunity to drive a new car every two or three years and all vehicles include the standard manufacturer’s warranty.
Our leasing deals are powered by Nationwide Vehicle Contracts.
