In America Car thieves put in the hard yards on New Year’s Day as they go about stealing new cars.
The National Insurance Crime Bureau for America released information about the days when most cars are stolen.
It seems that the car thieves of the US are busiest on New Year’s Day taking over 3,017 vehicles. Instead of nursing hangovers the criminals get on their way and target new cars when most people are most inattentive.
On a normal day 2,650 new and used cars are stolen in the America amounting to one every 33 seconds. They’d be happy for sales figures of new cars at that rate.
"We know that thieves never miss an opportunity to make a quick buck by stealing a car," said NICVB president and CEO Joe Wehrle.
"They work weekends, nights and holidays and ironically, they are particularly busy on New Year’s Day and Labour Day."
There have been no figures officially released in the UK but this trend is likely to translate across the border. Christmas is a time for a lot of car theft and with Sat Nav’s being a very popular present there are a lot of new shiny toys on offer for the thief about now.
The message is to be careful of that new present you have got and make sure you hide it away. Lexus are particularly good at theft avoidance.
They feature toughened glass to stop thieves gaining entry to your vehicle. Maybe it’s time to treat yourself to a new Lexus to protect the furry dice your secretary bought you this Christmas.

There are many practical reasons to leasing a car rather than buying one. Car leasing offers lower monthly payments, lower initial deposit, road tax and breakdown recovery. You also have the opportunity to drive a new car every two or three years and all vehicles include the standard manufacturer’s warranty.
Our leasing deals are powered by Nationwide Vehicle Contracts.
