Drivers cutting down on motor cover could force 11 million drivers of the road this summer.
Motorists are finding ways to cut corners on the costs of driving and many have cancelled their roadside breakdown cover. Up to two and a half million have axed their cover to reduce bills irrespective of the dangers of driving without it.
Research from TOTAL reveals there will be 37% more vehicles on UK roads, as Brits swap summer holidays abroad for ones closer to home. This coupled with the fact that over half of UK motorists have admitted to carrying out their own vehicle repairs to save money, means the probability of breaking down this summer is higher than ever before.
In fact, TOTAL estimates the absence of breakdown cover could end up costing drivers over £9million in just call out charges, the equivalent of 6,000 all inclusive holidays to the Maldives, 33 brand new Rolls Royce Phantoms or 1,125 Ford Ka’s.
Gemma Shepherdson, Brand Manager, TOTAL explained:
“With so much more pressure expected on UK roads, both drivers and vehicles are at risk of blowing a gasket. To help ease this pressure TOTAL is the first UK petrol retailer to launch free breakdown cover for its customers. We believe this is an excellent way of giving something back, a valuable service that motorists want, need and will genuinely use at a time when every penny counts.”
In a new innovative way TOTAL, the fuel providers are offering customers free breakdown cover for 14 days with every purchase of 30 litres of fuel from its forecourts.
With every 30 litres of fuel purchased for car drivers and 10 litres for motorcyclists, customers will receive an activation card, then all they need to do is text the unique number printed on the card together with their vehicle registration to TOTAL Assistance.
TOTAL Assistance will then confirm their registration and membership policy number back to the customer’s mobile phone. The cover includes home recovery and is available on all vehicles up to three and a half tonnes in weight including motorbikes. Motorcyclists need only fill up with 10 litres of fuel to qualify.
Gemma Shepherdson, Brand Manager, TOTAL concluded:
“There really are no gimmicks, the TOTAL Assistance breakdown cover is completely free for customers purchasing their fuel from TOTAL, and with a little bit of forward planning, customers can ensure they are covered for the whole year round.”

There are many practical reasons to leasing a car rather than buying one. Car leasing offers lower monthly payments, lower initial deposit, road tax and breakdown recovery. You also have the opportunity to drive a new car every two or three years and all vehicles include the standard manufacturer’s warranty.
Our leasing deals are powered by Nationwide Vehicle Contracts.
