Japanese manufacturer Toyota has announced further details of its accelerator pedal safety recall programme in the UK.
The brand has confirmed that the DVLA has started work immediately to provide the manufacturer with the contact details of owners/registered keepers of the vehicles affected by the accelerator problem. The records have been made a top priority by the DVLA and Toyota will receive the required data in two days.
Toyota will then be contacting the owners/keepers immediately to inform them that their vehicle is among those covered by the recall. The letter will explain the issue and the signs drivers should look out for that might indicate their car has a problem. It will also provide details of what to do in the very rare event of problem arising, and where to find further advice and assistance.
Miguel Fonseca, Managing Director Toyota GB, said: “We are committed to accomplishing this safety recall as quickly as possible, it is our aim to do so within a matter of eight weeks, in spite of the large number of vehicles involved.
“The DVLA has helped us greatly in moving things forward. We are in discussion with our network of Toyota service centres to explore options for carrying out the recall work as quickly as possible, and with the least inconvenience to our customers. This will include prioritisation of recall work, weekend working and extended opening hours.”
The parts required for the recall are being expected to arrive in the UK from Japan on Wednesday next week. Toyota technicians will have received specific training to rectify the problem and the repair should take no more than 30 minutes to complete.
Owners/keepers will subsequently receive a second letter inviting them to contact their chosen Toyota service centre to book a date and time for their car to be attended to.

There are many practical reasons to leasing a car rather than buying one. Car leasing offers lower monthly payments, lower initial deposit, road tax and breakdown recovery. You also have the opportunity to drive a new car every two or three years and all vehicles include the standard manufacturer’s warranty.
Our leasing deals are powered by Nationwide Vehicle Contracts.
