Toyota recalls Prius

Toyota recalls Prius

Japanese manufacturer Toyota has confirmed a worldwide recall of the Prius hybrid model due to concerns with its braking system.

The recall affects the latest third-generation Prius built before January 27, 2010 and more than 8500 cars in the UK are affected.

Problems relate to the Prius’s braking system. Toyota claim the problem is a software flitch within the anti-lock braking system (ABS). Owners have previously reported concerns with the brakes, claiming they ‘momentarily fail’ on bumpy or slippery surfaces. Despite the latest recall, Toyota claim that the braking and safety is not 'compromised'.

Toyota is currently in the process of writing to every owner or keeper of affected vehicles having obtained their contact details from the DVLA.

Recalled vehicles will then receive an update to the software in the Prius's brake control system which will rectify the problem. The update was automatically put in place on the Prius production line from late January 2010.

A Toyota spokesman said: 'We have decided to recall as we regard safety for our customers as our foremost priority.'

The latest Prius recall is a second blow to the world’s largest carmaker after the company announced the recall of eight European & US models due to problems with a sticking accelerator.

Toyota Prius owners can get more information on the recall by calling Toyota's Customer Relations on 0800 138 8744.

Car Leasing vs Buying

Car Leasing Video DemoThere are many practical reasons to leasing a car rather than buying one. Car leasing offers lower monthly payments, lower initial deposit, road tax and breakdown recovery. You also have the opportunity to drive a new car every two or three years and all vehicles include the standard manufacturer’s warranty.

Our leasing deals are powered by Nationwide Vehicle Contracts.
