The new Vauxhall Astra has picked up an amazing five star safety rating in the latest tests.
This year Euro NCAP brought in a new award system combining the scores from all areas of testing and giving out just one tough score.
When looking at Astra’s active head rests Euro NCAP gave its highest points ever. The head rests are especially important because whiplash is the most common occupant injury suffered when a car is hit from behind. Vauxhall’s active headrest system, an integral part of the brand’s industry-leading seats developed with the Insignia.
The Astra scored exceptionally well on its front passenger occupant protection in a frontal impact. NCAP also added points because Electronic Stability Controlplus is standard on all variants in all of the 27 countries which use Euro NCAP ratings as well as Norway and Switzerland.
Euro NCAP now releases one overall star rating with a maximum of five stars. The number of stars reflects how well a vehicle performs in four areas: adult protection, child safety, pedestrian protection and safety assist.
The score is calculated by weighing points in the four areas while still ensuring that no section is neglected
“Opel designs, engineers and builds some of the safest cars in the world. That isn’t opinion, it is fact confirmed by independent safety organizations,” says Hans Demant, managing director of Adam Opel GmbH.
