Since its launch last year, the Tata Nano has held the top spot at the ‘World’s Cheapest Car’… then came the arrival of the new Geely IG.
This week, Chinese manufacturer Geely unveiled a brand new city car – named the Geely IG – which it claims will be cheaper than the Tata Nano.
Priced at just £1,500 when it goes on sale in China in 2012, the new Geely IG is £1000 cheaper than its rival the Tata Nano, knocking it off the top spot and claiming the ‘World’s Cheapest Car’ title. The Tata Nano, which has yet to hit the UK but is expected in 2011, costs around £2,500.
The new cheeky Geely IG boasts four seats, concept top hinged 'gullwing' style doors (similar to those seen on the Mercedes SLS supercar) and is powered by 1.0-litre, 70bhp petrol engine with five-speed automatic transmission.
Chinese manufacture Geely – which has just bought Volvo from Ford - plans to expand its own range into mainland Europe, hinting the IG could make it to the UK soon after its Chinese launch. An electric Geely IG version is rumoured too, possibly for sale in 2015.

There are many practical reasons to leasing a car rather than buying one. Car leasing offers lower monthly payments, lower initial deposit, road tax and breakdown recovery. You also have the opportunity to drive a new car every two or three years and all vehicles include the standard manufacturer’s warranty.
Our leasing deals are powered by Nationwide Vehicle Contracts.
