Working on a new efficient theme, Mini is announcing a new range of powerful diesels for next year.
The benefit of being owned by BMW is paying of as some of their best technology is being shoehorned into the Mini format. When I say shoehorned it is almost in the literal sense.
The BMW 1 Series comes in the 120d engine variant but has it mounted longitudinally in the BMW’s long bonnet. The same engine, however, is to be fitted in the much shorter Mini by cramming it in sideways.
In the 1 Series the 120d produces around 177 bhp and can do 0 – 62 mph in 7.5 seconds. Unfortunately the Mini will have a slightly detuned version probably taking it down to around 150 bhp.
Now the technology has been proven in the smaller vehicle BMW may well look higher up the range to engines such as the 123d, which uses twin-turbo technology to give 200 bhp.
As with all Minis these days it will no doubt have the stop/start technology and will join the lone Mini diesel the 110 bhp Cooper D.
