Three cleaner, greener Volkswagen Golf diesels are being added to the hatchback's line-up. All of the models emit less than 120g/km CO2 and a sub-100g/km model is also on the way.
The new 1.6-litre engine comes in either 89bhp or 104bhp form, with the lower-powered version (available with S trim only) capable of 62.8mpg and CO2 emissions of just 118g/km. It has a top speed of 110mph and accelerates from 0-62mph in 12.9 seconds.
The 104bhp unit returns 62.8mpg and emits 119g/km of CO2, with a 0-62mph time of 11.3 seconds and a top speed of 117mph. It can be ordered with S or SE trim, and the seven-speed DSG semi-automatic gearbox is an option.
The eco-friendly Bluemotion model uses the 104bhp diesel, with revised aerodynamics and gearbox ratios, a reduced ride height, low-rolling-resistance tyres and an engine stop-start system. All this helps to return an average 68.9mpg and CO2 emissions of just 107g/km.
Bluemotion models come with the same equipment as SE, including seven airbags, air-conditioning, rain-sensing wipers, automatic headlights, MP3 compatibility, cruise control and stability control.
The new engines arrive in the UK in September 2009 to replace the 110bhp 2.0-litre diesel unit that's currently offered, and a even more economical Bluemotion version – emitting around 99g/km and returning more than 75mpg – will join the range at the end of the year.
Prices start from £15,305 (Golf S TDI 90 three-door), with the Golf TDI 105 from £16,050 and Bluemotion models from £17,165 (Golf Bluemotion SE TDI 105 three-door).

There are many practical reasons to leasing a car rather than buying one. Car leasing offers lower monthly payments, lower initial deposit, road tax and breakdown recovery. You also have the opportunity to drive a new car every two or three years and all vehicles include the standard manufacturer’s warranty.
Our leasing deals are powered by Nationwide Vehicle Contracts.
