The Peugeot 308 was launched in 2007and replaces the previous 307 model. Peugeot worked hard to improve the 308 and the differences are noticeable, there is a huge improvement both in quality and safety. The new 308 also has a longer wheelbase resulting in a more spacious interior, as well as having a restyled exterior. The improved safety features have led the 308 to achieve a maximum five-star Euro NCAP crash test rating. Features include seven smart airbags and Isofix child seat fittings. The 308 has been praised for its good balance of ride quality and sharp handling. There is also a large, spacious boot and a full size spare wheel which is a rarity on most modern cars. It's main rivals are the Ford Focus, Fiat Bravo and Vauxhall Astra.
Both the three and five door models share the same engine lineup. There are three petrol variants, starting with the 1.4 litre VTi 95, then the 1.6 VTi 120 and sporty 1.6 THP 150 which has been developed jointly with BMW. There are three diesel options, all use Peugeot's advanced HDi engines. Options start with the 1.6 litre Hdi, available with 90 or 110bhp, top spec is the powerful 2.0 litre Hdi 136. Transmission options available on selected models include five or six-speed manual and the semi-automatic six-speed ECG gearbox.
Trim levels start with the base level Urban model, then the S. Next is the SR and SE which are only available on the five-door model. The Sport model features 17 inch alloy wheels, sports seats and sportier exterior bodywork, while the top of the range GT model adds a Bluetooth hands free telephone kit, cruise control, rear parking sensors, 18 inch alloy wheels and much more.
