The 407 was launched in 2004, it is the replacement for the hugely successful 406 model and continues a long line of capable models. It's eye-catching styling was received a mild restyle in 2008 to keep it up to date with rivals like the Mazda 6, Ford Mondeo and Citroen C5. The 407 is a big improvement over its predecessor in many ways, most notably is the new suspension system which features a double wishbone front set-up that improves the ride and handling extensively. The 407 is also now one of the safest in its class, with a selection of airbags and other safety features it achieved the maximum five-star Euro NCAP rating for occupants. It also achieved one of the highest ratings for pedestrian protection.
The 407 has a selection of strong diesel engines; these turbocharged common rail Hdi engines provide good economy as well as low emissions. The engine range start with the 1.6 Hdi with 110bhp, then there is the 2.0 Hdi which is available with either 136 or 140bhp on the sportier models. Next is the 2.2litre Hdi 170 and most powerful of all is the 2.7 litre Hdi V6 engine with 205bhp and 440 Nm torque. Transmission options available are the five or six-speed manual and the six-speed automatic.
Trim levels start with the S – notable features include digital climate control and cruise control with speed limiter. Next is the SE RT5 and then the SR with 16inch alloy wheels and Bluetooth handsfree phone system. Top of the range is the GT model which features a multimedia centre with 7 inch screen, front and rear parking assist, RT5 satellite navigation, 30GB integrated MP3 player, leather upholstery with heated front seats, 18 inch alloy wheels and much more.
