The Espace model is credited with being the world’s first MPV with the first generation model being released in 1984. This new model was launched in 2003 and keeps Renault at the top of the people carrier game. The model features an all steel body is also the first to achieve a maximum five-star EuroNCAP rating with an integrated Isofix child seat, seatbelt pretensioners, an array of airbags and more. The stlyish Espace is also highly versatile, it features seven seats, and the rear five can be folded down or removed to increase space. There are also a lot of clever storage solutions to be found all around the cabin. The Grand Espace features a longer wheelbase than the standard version, resulting in more rear legroom and a larger boot area for even more versatility. Its main rivals are the Chrysler Grand Voyager, Ford Galaxy and Volkswagen Caravelle.
Petrol engines for the Grand Scenic start with the turbocharged 2.0 litre T with 170 PS, top of the range is the 3.5 litre V6. The highly capable common rail diesel engines start with the 2.0 litre dCi with either 150 or 175PS, there is also the 3.0 V6 dCi available on the Initiale model. Transmission options available are the five or six-speed manual, six-speed automatic or five-speed semi automatic.
All models are fitted with air conditioning, including the base level Team model. The Dynamique adds 17 inch alloy wheels, climate control and more. The Dynamique S includes auto headlights and windscreen wipers, hands free key card and part leather, part Alcantara upholstery. Top of the range is the Initiale model, it features 17 inch Alda alloy wheels, full leather upholstery with six 'captain's chairs', satellite navigation with full colour 3D map and more.
