The Megane range has been around since 1995. This third generation model follows on from the previous 2 by offering class leading safety features in a well specced package. It is more conservatively styled than the previous model with a more subtle boot. The new model is still very stylish and sleek, with smoothly integrated bump strips and an appealing shape. The new Megane makes big leaps with a more refined and greatly improved ride quality and sharper handling. The interior is also greatly improved, with a high quality, high tech approach which can rival more prestigious makers like BMW or Audi. The new Megane achieved a maximum five-star Euro NCAP rating and has all the latest safety features including Isofix child seat fittings and an array of air bags. Its main rivals are the Honda Civic, Ford Focus and Peugeot 308.
The Megane hatchback comes with a wide range of engine options; petrol variants start with the 1.6 litre with either 100 or 110 PS and the powerful turbocharged 2.0 litre TCE with 180 PS. Diesel engines start with the 1.5 dCi 86 and 1.5 dCi 106 – both offer exceptional mileage at over 60 MPG and their low emission ratings mean they will cost just £35 per year to tax. The top spec diesel engine is the 1.9 dCi 130. Transmission is available as either five or six-speed manual, depending on model chosen.
Trim levels start with the Expression range, featuring air conditioning and all round electric windows. The Dynamique model adds 16 inch alloy wheels, automatic wipers and headlights, leather steering wheel and hands free Renault key card. Top of the range is the Privilege model which includes electric folding door mirrors, rear parking sensors and dual zone climate control.
