Saab released the 9-3 in 1998 to replace the popular 900 range, this is the second generation of 9-3 which was launched in 2003 and refreshed in 2008. This stylish model shares innovations with the rest of the 9-3 range including the ReAxs system which enhances cornering stability and understeer by providing small amounts of steering to the rear wheels. Other unique Saab features fitted to all models include the Saab Active Head Restraints (SAHR2) which helps to reduce whiplash injuries and the Night Panel which dims all but the most essential interior lighting when engaged to help reduce eye strain during night driving. The 9-3 Sport Saloon slots into a competitive market with rivals such as the Alfa Romeo 159 Saloon, Honda Accord, Volkswagen Passat and Volvo S40.
Engines options start with the 1.8i petrol, then there are the turbocharged offerings; the 1.8t, 2.0t with 175 PS, 2.0T with 210 PS and the powerful 2.8 V6 Turbo with 280 PS. Diesel engines offered are the 1.9TiD with 120 or 150 PS, and also the twin turbo 1.9TTiD. Saab now offers engines powered by renewable BioEthanol with their 1.8t Biopower and 2.0t Biopower. Transmissions available are the five or six-speed manual and the five or six speed Sentronic automatic. Saab XWD system is available on select models.
Trim levels start with the well specced Airflow, then there is the Linear SE, Vector Sport and top of the range Aero which comes fitted with 18 inch alloy wheels, leather sports seats and performance brakes.
