The 9-5 was first released in 1997 to replace Saab's outgoing executive model; the 9000. The 9-5 has been restyled several times during its life cycle, most recently in 2007, maintaining Saab's Aeronautical heritage. The 9-5 estate is one of the most aerodynamic estate vehicles around with its aircraft style wraparound screen and sculpted bodywork. The 9-5 Estate features a large luggage capacity which features tracks in the boot for securing loads as well as an innovative sliding load floor to make loading easier. The 9-5 Estates main rivals are considered to be the Volvo V70, Audi A6 Avant and BMW 5-series Touring.
The 9-5 Estate features Saab's night panel system, which when activated turns off all interior illumination apart from the speedometer to ease eye stain whilst night driving. The system also lights any display that is useful to the driver. The 9-5 range continues Saab's tradition of highly safe vehicles with a range of airbags fitted as well as Anti Lock Brakes, Stability Control and whiplash reducing head restraints.
The 9-5 Estate engine options include one diesel option, the efficient 1.9TiD with 150 PS. Petrol options are either the 2.0t with 150 PS, or the 2.3T with 260 PS. Saab also offer an engine which can run on petrol and renewable BioEthanol E85, the 2.0t BioPower with 180 PS. Transmissions are available as five-speed automatic, five-speed Sentronic and five-speed manual.
The 9-5 Estate comes in two versions, the Turbo Edition and the 2.3T Edition. Both are well specified and include 17 inch alloy wheels, heated front and rear seats, electrically adjustable driver’s seat, dual-zone climate control, cooled & lockable glovebox, electric windows and mirrors, cruise control and rear parking sensors. The top of the range 2.3T Edition also features an electrical adjustable passenger seat, 3 position memory for the drivers seat and Bi-Xenon headlamps with auto-levelling and pressure washers.
