Saab resurrected their 9-x brand numbering which dates back to their first car when they launched the 9-5 range in 1997 to replace the Saab 9000. The 9-5 has been redesigned several times over its lifetime, most recently it was given a dramatic makeover in 2006. The 9-5 Saloon features numerous safety features which have enabled it to achieve a 5-star EuroNCAP crash test rating. It has front and side airbags for driver and passenger, as well as head/thorax airbags, Anti Lock Brakes, Stability Control and whiplash reducing head restraints. The Saab 9-5's main competition in this market is the Volvo S80, Audi A4 and BMW 5-series.
Engines available include the turbo diesel 1.9TiD engine with 150 PS. The petrol range includes the turbo charged 2.0t and the 2.3T with 260 PS. There is also a performance overboost function available, which enables you to up the power for up to 20 seconds. Saab now also offer a Biopower engine with the 2.0t Biopower, it can run on a combination of BioEthanol E85 and petrol and helps to reduce carbon emissions from fossil fuels. Transmissions are available as five-speed automatic, five-speed Sentronic and five-speed manual.
The 9-5 Saloon comes in two versions, the Turbo Edition and the 2.3T Edition. Both are well specified and include 17 inch alloy wheels, heated front and rear seats, electrically adjustable driver’s seat, dual-zone climate control, cooled & lockable glovebox, electric windows and mirrors, cruise control and rear parking sensors. The top of the range 2.3T Edition also features an electrical adjustable passenger seat, 3 position memory for the drivers seat and Bi-Xenon headlamps with auto-levelling and pressure washers.
