SEAT first launched the Ibiza range of small hatchbacks in 1985. They have been a popular model ever since and the latest fourth generation version was released in 2008. The new Ibiza is the first car to be based on the new VW A05 platform, which will be used for the 2009 Volkswagen Polo. Improvements over the old model include a roomier and better quality interior, with interior space among the best in class. Other competitors in this market are the Mazda 2, Peugeot 207 and Fiat Grande Punto.
The new Ibiza has also achieved top marks in the Euro NCAP crash safety test with a rating of 5-stars. Its safety features include head and chest airbags for the front passengers, ABS, traction control and optional ESP. Other features on this new model include the light cornering function which lights the corner ahead and hill hold control which can assist with hill starts. It is also available with an optional on-board computer which can relay information about the car to the occupants.
Engine options start with the three-cylinder 1.2 12v, then there is the 1.4 litre 16v and 1.6 litre 16v with 105 PS. There is also a diesel option – the 1.9 litre TDI with 105 PS. All options come with five-speed manual transmission.
Trim levels have been simplified for the new Ibiza range, they now with the base level S, then the mid-spec SE and suitably sporty Sport model with 16 inch alloy wheels and sporty exterior and interior as standard
