Smart was formed in 1993, combining the efforts of Swiss watchmaker Swatch and Mercedes-Benz parent company Daimler. The focus was on making a small, efficient and ecologically sound vehicle which is easy to park and is meant for the urban environment. The first production model was launched in 1998 as a left-hand drive only model. In 2003 Smart released their Roadster and Roadster Coupe models, they were designed to be fun to drive, with a mid-engined, rear wheel drive setup. Smart also created a four seater supermini, the Forfour, which was released in 2004. The Roadster and Coupe stopped production around 2006 and production continued on the more popular Fortwo model.
The Smart Fortwo cars are surprising safe despite their small design as they feature Smart's own Tridion safety cell which enables the Smart vehicles to achieve a 4-star Euro NCAP crash test rating. Another unique feature is the changeable body panels, they are made with scratch resistant plastic and can be replaced and swapped over. A new innovation on Smart cars is the Micro Hyrid Drive which turns off the engine when stationary and during low speed braking, it turns the engine on and engages first gear when the brake is released. It can result in up to 29% better fuel economy in urban environments.
Smart currently makes two cars; the Smart Fortwo Coupe and Fortwo Cabriolet.

There are many practical reasons to leasing a car rather than buying one. Car leasing offers lower monthly payments, lower initial deposit, road tax and breakdown recovery. You also have the opportunity to drive a new car every two or three years and all vehicles include the standard manufacturer’s warranty.
Our leasing deals are powered by Nationwide Vehicle Contracts.
