The Legacy estate was launched at the same time as the saloon version, in 2003. It shares the same AWD system found in the majority of Subaru's, which considerably improves grip and safety, as well as proving effective at getting the Legacy around in tricky situations where 2wd cars would fail. The Subaru's build quality and smooth, quiet ride set it apart from rivals such as the Ford Mondeo and put it more in the range of the Volvo V70, Saab 9-5 estate and Mercedes-Benz C-Class estate.
All engine options offer outstanding performance, the petrol variants start with the 2.0 litre four-cylinder boxer, then there is the 2.5 litre and high performance 3.0 litre 6-cylinder boxer capable of 60 in just 6.9 seconds. There is also the 2.0 litre boxer diesel, offering a class leading combination of performance, economy and low emissions. Transmission options available are the five and six-speed manual and four and five speed automatic variants with Prodrive developed Sportshift.
Trim levels start with the well specified R, which includes cruise control, HID Xenon lights and six-disc auto-changer audio system. There is also the leather upholstered SE, RE, REn and SEn spec, with the latter two featuring satellite navigation incorporating DVD playback. The top of the range 3.0 spec B includes 8-way powered front seats, 18 inch alloy wheels and SI-drive, which allows drivers to electronically adjust car engine and transmission systems.
