Subaru's Outback model was first launched in 1995, the current third generation model was released in 2005 based on the Legacy platform. It's an all-wheel drive crossover vehicle with higher ride height than the Legacy along with a tougher SUV-like exterior to enable it to travel over rougher ground. The Outback jointly won Top Gear's Car of the Year award for 2007 for its impeccable build quality and all round abilities.
Engine's available are the same extremely capable units found on the Legacy and Legacy Estate models; starting with the 2.0 and 2.5 litre four-cylinder boxer petrol unit's, there is also the powerful 3.0 litre six-cylinder boxer. The new 2.0 litre Boxer diesel engine is also available on this model, providing combined best in class performance, economy and low emissions. Transmission options start with the four-speed Sportshift, then the five-speed manual and five-speed Tiptronic. Also available is the S-I drive, a revolutionary system that puts the driver in control of the vehicles engine and transmission characteristics.
The range starts with the S trim level, which includes six-disc multi changer and 8-way powered driver seat adjustment. Then there is the R, SE, RE, SEn and REn, the latter two include touch screen satellite navigation. All outback models are fitted with stylish 17 inch alloy wheels.
