The Astra, first launched in 1980 was Vauxhall's first attempt at a front-wheel drive production car and was an instant success, becoming a top seller soon after. Today's Astra remains a top seller, with this latest model, released in 2004 more popular than ever. The competitors in this segment are the best-selling Ford Focus, Toyota Auris and Mazda 3. The styling on the Sport is one of its strong points with Top Gear's Jeremy Clarkson memorably having to eat his own hair following his bet that the production car would not look as good as the concept. A unique feature is the panoramic windscreen which extends onto the roofline which is available on selected models.
The Astra Sport scored a top 5-star rating in the Euro NCAP crash test thanks to its array of front and side airbags as well as Isofix child seat fittings.
Engine options are the same as the five-door hatchback. The petrol engines start with the 1.4i 16v, then the 1.6i 16v VVT, 1.6i Turbo and sporty 1.8i 16v VVT. Diesel options range from the 1.3CDTi to the 1.7CDTi and the 1.9CDTi. Transmission options include the automatic in 4 and 6-speed, the Easytronic 5-speed and manual gearbox's come in either five or six-speed.
Also offered is the Astra Sport VXR, with its 2.0 litre turbo charger petrol engine developing 240 BHP, the VXR can power its way to 60 MPH in just 6.2 seconds. The VXR also has a sportier exterior with muscular looking bumpers and arches along with 18 inch alloys and a sports interior. Other trim levels are the SXi , SRi and Design.
