The new VW Golf MK6 is the latest offering from VW. Due for release in 2009, the new Golf will continue the strong brand that has been built up over 30 years since the first Golf in 1974. The new Golf is based on the award winning MK5 Golf, with numerous improvements, notably the new look following on from the new styling direction of the Scirocco. Other improvements include new safety features such as a driver knee airbag and new whiplash reducing headrests which enable the car to achieve one of the highest levels of safety available in its class – as proved with its 5-Star Euro NCAP rating. Sure to be a match for its top rivals, the Ford Focus, Vauxhall Astra and Honda Civic, the new Golf has already won the 2008 Golden Steering Wheel award for best compact car.
The engines come in a variety of different sizes and power outputs, starting with the 1.4, the 1.4 TSI 122 PS, 1.4 TSI 160 PS and the petrol range tops out with the 1.6. The diesel engine is the new common-rail 2.0 TDI with either 110 PS or 140 PS offering excellent fuel economy. Gearbox options include the six and seven-speed DSG automatic gearbox as well as the normal manual.
Prices will start from around £13000 for the entry-level S three-door model with the 1.4 litre engine and will rise to around £20000 for the top of the range GT TDI five-door with the 2.0 litre turbo diesel engine with six-speed DSG gearbox. The S level of trim includes features such as remote central locking and Climatic air conditioning and CD/Radio, the SE level adds improved audio systems and facility for iPod connection as well as 16 inch alloys and cruise control. The top of the range GT will include, amongst other things, lowered sports suspension, 17 inch alloy wheels and sports seats.
