The Volkswagen Passat was first introduced into the VW range in 1973 and has gone through many variations since then. The MK5 Passat impressed with it high quality finished that set it ahead of its competitors the Ford Mondeo, Vauxhall Vectra and Toyota Avensis. The latest Passat MK6 takes inspiration from the top of the range VW Phaeton and continues its reputation for class leading interior quality and smooth looks and strives even harder to match more upmarket competitors such as the Mercedes C-Class and BMW 3-Series.
The Passat is one of the safest in its class, achieving a 5-Star Euro NCAP rating thanks to equipment such as ABS, ESP, six airbags, whiplash reducing head restraints and ISOFIX child seat fittings. There is a vast options list available on the Passat, including LED lights, rain sensing wipers, Bluetooth phone connectivity and automatic hazard lights.
Volkswagen offer no less than 10 different engine's for the Passat. Petrol options are the 1.4 TSI, 1.8 TSI, 2.0 TSI, 3.2 V6 FSI 4Motion and the top of the range 3.6 litre V6 with 300 PS. Diesel options are the frugal Bluemotion 2.0 TDI, and the standard 2.0 TDI which comes with either 110, 140 or 170 PS. There is a variety of transmission options available including six-speed manual, six-speed auto tiptronic and the DSG dual clutch automatic gearbox on selected models. VW also offer all wheel drive on selected models, utilizing the 4Motion system, similar to Audi's Quattro system.
Volkswagen also launched the sporty R36 Passat in 2007, featuring a 300 PS 3.6 litre VR6 engine capable of pushing the car to 60 in just 5.6 seconds. The R36 has many sport features including lowered sports suspension, 18 inch alloy wheels, redesigned front and rear spoilers as well as a sports interior.
