The Polo range was introduced by Volkswagen in 1975 and has gone through many incarnation and facelifts over the years. The most recent Polo MK4 was released in 2002 and restyled with a new Passat-style look in 2005. Sharing its underpinnings with the SEAT Ibiza and Skoda Fabia the Polo is VW's second smallest car after the Fox and is available with either a 3 or 5-door hatchback. Aiming to be more prestigious then its main rivals - the Ford Fiesta, Vauxhall Corsa and Renault Clio, the Polo costs a little more but maintains Volkswagen's reputation for high build quality and solid interior design.
The Polo's strong galvanised laser welded body and array of safety features such as ABS, ESP, airbags, ISOFIX child seat fittings and crumple zones, help the Polo achieve a 4-star Euro NCAP crash test rating. The Polo aims high with features like electric windows, heated door mirrors, leather upholstery and rear parking sensors available on selected models.
Petrol engines come in a choice of 1.2 60PS, 1.2 70PS, 1.4 80PS and the 1.8 turbo found in the GTI model that develops 150PS. Diesel engines are 1.4 litre turbo diesels with either 70 or 80 PS. The Bluemotion model with its 1.4 litre turbo diesel offers exceptional economy and can achieve around 75 MPG. With its extremely low emissions it costs absolutely nothing in road tax.
Trim levels range from the base level E, the popular Match, then the SE, Bluemotion 1 & 2 and the sporty GTI model with 16 inch alloy wheels and GTI sports styling pack.
